Of all my years of shooting in the street with my trusty DSLR workhorse, I’ve slowly come up with a wish list of features that would make it easier for me to capture keepers. The top 2 on the list are: a smaller camera body, and a full-frame sensor. So when I heard about the release of the Sony RX1, which basically combines these 2 features, I was crazy excited. And just recently, I had the chance to test drive this baby for a couple of weeks.

Walking around Orchard Road on weekends looking for strangers to shoot candidly, I realized it’s been a while since I’ve done this.… Read more

A few months ago, I was contacted by Michael, Art Director of Random House Inc based in New York. He had an author in Singapore and needed a photograph for the cover of his upcoming book called “Street Smarts”. I was crazy excited about it, it was my first time to shoot for a book cover. But it was only later that I felt I might be biting more than I could chew when I realized the guy who wrote the book was Jim Rogers – Wall Street legend, worldwide adventurer, best-selling author.

I was commissioned to shoot a new indie Parisian fashion label called Honoré. They wanted to create a lookbook with a sort of street vide similar to some of my candid photos. Now I haven’t really done a lot of fashion photography. The closest I got to it was shooting strangers in the streets as if the street was a catwalk. So I guess when you hire a guy used to shooting street photography to do fashion, you sort of get a little bit of both genres.

The first thing the client and I discussed was the location of the shoot.… Read more

As we were planning our wedding last year, friends would often jokingly ask me “So… will you be photographing your own wedding?” I thought: of course not, that would be close to impossible. But shooting our own pre-wedding photos was a different story. There would be a lot of limitations to work around with, but I thought what the heck… let’s just try it out. At the very least, we would have fun doing it, right? So we did.

The first thing we agreed on was we wanted the photos to be meaningful and interesting in a way that it represents our relationship.… Read more

I haven’t been able to work on personal projects or shoot in the streets lately because the past few months have been crazy busy for me. I’ve been fortunate enough to get a number of commissioned shoots – ranging from the usual portraiture to something I haven’t done before like sports photography and shooting in a spa.

It was pretty overwhelming. For a guy who hasn’t been doing this full-time, it still felt like I was new to this. Working on one client after another was very nerve-wracking and exhausting, but the challenge was well worth it. These are some of the commissioned shoots I had the pleasure of working on:

Wilhelmsen Shipping Services
The company was having an annual meeting of executives from offices around the world, and they wanted corporate portraits for 11 of their guys for internal use.… Read more

There is a significant population of elderlies in Singapore who live alone in one-bedroom flats, some of them have no next of kin. Project Silverline is an initiative by Singtel to improve the way of living for these folks using donated iPhones with specially created applications designed to help reduce isolation and open their world to new experiences. It was an honor for me to be a small part of this initiative through photography.

Part of my involvement was to take portraits of some of these old folks. When Jacinta from Ogilvy asked if I was keen to do this, I immediately said yes.… Read more

Everybody needs a hobby. It gives you a chance to do something care-free in your leisure time, helps you relax and get your mind off work. It’s pretty much play time for grown ups. In my case, I started taking pictures as a hobby. Photography was something I’ve always wanted to do for so long and I finally got to dabble in it when I moved here in Singapore 4 years ago.

So there I was, walking around Orchard Road on weekends trying to get good pictures. I was fanatically shooting as much as I can, relentlessly looking for inspiration, and eventually pushed myself to get better and better shots.… Read more

I’ve been working as a graphic designer for more than 10 years now, and have been doing photography for about 4… so Photoshop is a staple for me. When Adobe released Photoshop CS6, I was in absolute geek bliss, pretty much how gamers felt like when they got their copy of Diablo III.

So after a couple of weeks using Photoshop CS6, I’d like to show my 3 favorite features. These are the new features which I anticipate I’ll be using a great deal as a photographer:

1) CONTENT-AWARE MOVE

One of the most impressive features in this version is the content-aware move.… Read more

I was commissioned by Jan Brunaes, CEO of IFS Asia Pacific, to take corporate portraits for 3 guys in his office. I haven’t really done any corporate portraits before so I figured I’d try it out.

The first thing I did was research on how corporate portraits usually look like. Most are the usual studio-type shots with the printed backdrop and strobes; others are the ones with skyscrapers in the background; and yet others have the company logo prominently displayed. I thought I’d just figure out how to go about it when I see their office. Jan offered to bring his Elinchrom light kit for the shoot but I insisted on using available light.… Read more

I was involved in a non-profit project where I needed to contribute a number of different images that depicted life in Singapore – one of the categories was family. I didn’t have a lot of family photos in my archive, so I decided to offer free photography sessions to local families.

I posted this on my facebook page, I also approached some of my office mates whom I know where family men. I got a few emails, but the responses really started to pour in when daddy bloggers Andy and Kelvin helped spread the word. Thanks, guys!

I offered free 20-minute photo sessions and in return for their time, I would email them select photographs from the session, and an A4 print of the photo of their choice.… Read more
